Some Very Important Points For Intending Ultra Competitors Before They Enter This Event

1. The Tarawera Ultramarathon is an ultra-long distance event. If competing you need to have the intention of running the majority of the distance. You'll be out until midnight with the possums if you decide to walk the entire route.

2. For solo runners, the 80km and 100km events require a level of fitness and training similar to that of competing in a marathon but with some dedicated training to endure beyond the standard marathon distance. For the 55km course, marathon-level fitness is just fine. There are some added challenges of rocks, roots and hills. Your training should reflect this.

3. This is a point to point course where the start and finish are some distance apart (approx 55km by road). Therefore, if you do not have supporters to transport you to the start and from the finish (or to and from relay points), you should indicate you'd like bus transport in this entry form. We will sort out bus costs, numbers and timetables later once we get an indication if this service is required.

The rules of The Tarawera Ultramarathon are as follows:

• New Zealand Trail Runs and its affiliates reserve the right to withdraw competitors from the event if it is deemed their safety could be compromised by continuing in the event.

• Competitors must be at least 16 years of age on the day of the event.

• Race numbers MUST be pinned to the front of the competitor’s shirt or shorts– NOT THE BACK OF THE SHIRT. This is for identification purposes on the course and at the finish when your place will be officially recorded. If a competitor’s number is not clearly displayed on the front of clothing they will be excluded from the event results.

• If nature calls - we impress upon competitors the need to do so well away from trail and especially any stream or waterway. There are lots of loos along the way. Use them.

• Please comply with all traffic marshals instructions for the duration of this event. We expect zero-to light traffic during this event. The few roads the event does travel on are not closed to traffic at any time during the event.

• Competitors must stay on the trails at all times and run. NO orienteering, bush-bashing or cutting corners is allowed. Failure to comply may result in AN OFFICIAL WARNING BEING ISSUED by a course official. IF THE COMPETITOR(S) CONTINUE TO IGNORE THE WARNING THE RESULTING OUTCOME WILL BE disqualification and exclusion from the event results.

• The Okataina Scenic Reserve contains many Wahi Tapu sites of importance to local Iwi. Please keep to the track at all times to minimise the likelihood of wandering into a culturally sensitive area.

• If you encounter hikers, please be courteous and step off the track allowing them ot pass safely. If you are wishing to pass another competitor on the track - pass on the left hand side and call out “passing on your left” before affecting the passing maneuver.

• Dropping of any litter on the track is strictly prohibited. Any competitor found to be deliberately dropping rubbish in the Park will be disqualified, excluded from the event results, dressed in sorts and singlet and forced to cut gorse with a pocket knife.

• Drop-bags will be allowed at 3 points on the course; Lake Okareka, Lake Okataina and Tarawera Falls. You may include your own special food and drink in these drop bags. Some competitors also may include extra clothing, a change of socks, shoes or body lubricant in these drop-bags. All drop bags will be transported by volunteers back to the finish line.

• No matches or accelerants are to be carried by competitors on the course under any circumstances.

• Competitors who encounter another competitor who is injured or in difficulty is obliged to stay and provide assistance to that competitor until an event marshal or technical official has arrived at the scene, and if necessary medical assistance has arrived.

• In the event of extreme weather conditions or a force majeure situation beyond the control of NZ Trail Runs. We reserve the right to reschedule the event to the reserve day (Sunday)

• All competitors share a safety responsibility with the organisers and must ensure that they have an acceptable state of health and have completed the necessary training to complete the event. Weather is likely to be warm, but can change suddenly and without warning. You are advised to carry warm clothing (such as a merino shirt) and stash extra clothing in your drop bags.

• All competitors need to be present at the awards ceremony to claim spot prizes.
